Apple Briefly Overtakes Nvidia as World's Most Valuable Company

Apple briefly snatched the world's most valuable company title from Nvidia in early trading Friday, touching $4.92 trillion in market cap while Nvidia sat at $4.86 trillion. The crown didn't stick. By the close of regular trading, Nvidia fought back to a $5.02 trillion valuation against Apple's $4.89 trillion, leaving a roughly $130 billion gap.

The $130 Billion Shuffle

Apple's stock climbed 1.76% to a record $333.26, marking the company's latest all-time high. Nvidia shares fell 2.40% to $207.40, extending a month-long slide. Over the past week, Apple has gained more than 7%; Nvidia has dropped nearly 4% across the past month. The brief swap underscores how closely the two tech giants are tracking each other, with Alphabet, in third place, more than half a trillion dollars behind.

Why Apple Gained Ground

Apple's Services unit hit an all-time high of $30.98 billion last quarter, giving the company a steady revenue stream beyond hardware. Greater China revenue surged to $25.53 billion, signaling strong demand in a key market. The company also has a fresh $100 billion buyback program and a $30 billion deal with Broadcom that deepens its in-house silicon roadmap. Polymarket traders currently price 96% odds of an iPhone 18 launch this year, suggesting confidence in Apple's product cycle. On the charts, AAPL broke through important resistance at $315 and set fresh all-time highs, with the latest peak at $334.68. The daily relative strength index pushed back above 70, indicating strong bullish pressure.

Why Nvidia Slipped

Nvidia's latest quarterly revenue hit $81.6 billion, up 85.2% year over year, and its data center networking grew 199% as hyperscalers race to build AI capacity. The company trades near 22 times forward earnings with a PEG ratio of 0.6 and gross margins near 75%. Despite those numbers, the stock has dropped nearly 4% over the past month. Apple, by contrast, commands a forward multiple closer to 32 times with gross margins around 49%. The divergence suggests investors are rotating between the two names, weighing Nvidia's high growth against Apple's broader ecosystem and services strength.

Earnings Deadlines Ahead

Both companies have report dates on the calendar. Apple reports earnings on July 30; Nvidia follows on August 26. Those numbers will likely determine which company holds the top spot for more than a few hours. For now, Nvidia remains the world's most valuable company by a thin margin, but the gap is small enough that a single trading session could flip it again.
