Citi has added another 238,538 shares of Strategy to its portfolio, spending $22 million on the purchase. The move brings the bank's total stake in the business intelligence and Bitcoin treasury company to $90.5 million, according to a filing this week.
What the filing shows
The transaction was disclosed in a regulatory filing dated August 3, 2026. Citi now holds roughly 1.2% of Strategy's outstanding shares. The bank first disclosed a position in Strategy earlier this year, and this latest buy is the largest single addition to date.
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has become a proxy for Bitcoin exposure among institutional investors. The company holds more than 200,000 BTC on its balance sheet. Citi's growing stake suggests the bank sees value in that strategy — and in Bitcoin itself — despite the asset's well-known volatility.
The timing isn't trivial. Bitcoin has traded in a relatively tight range this summer, and some institutional players have been cautious. Citi's purchase bucks that trend.
Strategy is scheduled to report quarterly earnings later this month. Investors will be watching for any update on the company's Bitcoin holdings and whether it plans to buy more. Citi hasn't commented on the filing, and it's not required to disclose future purchase plans.
The filing also doesn't say whether Citi plans to increase its position further. But the bank's cumulative $90.5 million bet is a clear signal that at least one major institution is doubling down.
