Andrew Left, the founder of Citron Research and one of the most prominent short sellers on Wall Street, was found guilty of securities fraud by a federal jury in Los Angeles. The verdict came after a three-week trial. Jurors convicted Left on 13 of the 17 counts he faced.
The charges and the evidence
The case centered on posts Left made online and stock trades he executed. Federal prosecutors argued that Left used his public platform to manipulate stock prices. He would publish negative reports about companies, then profit when shares fell. The defense argued that Left was simply expressing his opinions. The jury didn't buy that.
Left, 55, built his reputation as a short seller who targeted companies he believed were overvalued. His reports often included strong language. Citron Research was known for its bearish calls. But the government said some of those calls were accompanied by trades that took advantage of the market reaction.
The trial took place in Los Angeles. Judge Dale S. Fischer presided. The jury deliberated for about a day before delivering the verdict.
Left's role as a short seller
For years, Left was a controversial figure in finance. He appeared on business news programs and had a large following on social media. He shorted stocks like GameStop and Tesla. In the GameStop saga of 2021, Left closed his short position after retail traders drove the stock up. He later said he respected the individual investor movement.
But the charges against him predated that episode. The indictment covered trades and statements from 2018 and 2019. The government said that during those years, Left repeatedly misled the public. He would announce a short position, then quickly reverse it after the stock dropped.
What comes next
Left was released on bond after the verdict. Sentencing has not been scheduled. Each count of securities fraud carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. The actual sentence will depend on federal guidelines and the judge's discretion.
The case is U.S. v. Left, 21-cr-00555, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
