DTCC Launches Live Blockchain Trial for Tokenized Securities with Vanguard, BlackRock, JPMorgan

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, the backbone of US securities settlement, launched a live blockchain trial this week for tokenized securities. Vanguard, BlackRock, and JPMorgan are the first participants. The trial aims to bring a slice of the trillion-dollar US securities market onto a distributed ledger, potentially reshaping how trades settle.

A live test, not a demo

The DTCC's pilot processes real transactions — not just test data. Tokenized securities would represent ownership of stocks, bonds, and other assets on a blockchain. The clearing house says the move could cut settlement times and reduce costs in a market that clears trillions daily. For now, the trial is limited to a small set of assets and participants, but the shift from simulation to live trading is a significant step.

The big three participants

Vanguard, BlackRock, and JPMorgan are on board. BlackRock manages over $10 trillion. Vanguard is a giant in index funds. JPMorgan runs Onyx, its own blockchain unit. Their involvement gives the trial credibility. It's not a side experiment — it's a serious push toward production. Each firm brings a different piece of the puzzle: asset management, custody, and blockchain infrastructure.

What tokenization means for settlement

Today, US securities settlement relies on a complex chain of intermediaries. A blockchain-based system could collapse that chain, letting buyers and sellers transfer ownership directly. The DTCC's trial is testing whether that works at scale. If successful, it could open up new efficiencies in a market that has seen little structural change in decades.

The DTCC hasn't set a public timeline for expanding the trial or moving to full production. But with three of the most influential firms in finance already testing, the pressure to deliver a working system is real. The next milestone will likely be a broader rollout to additional market participants later this year. No specific date has been announced.
