ECB Hikes 25bps at Sintra, Lagarde Skips Crypto in Growth Remarks

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde announced a 25 basis point rate hike at the Sintra forum this week, citing improved euro area growth. For a crypto audience watching for any nod to digital currencies, the silence was the story: Lagarde made no mention of cryptocurrency in her remarks.

The rate move

The quarter-point increase brings the ECB's main rate to 4.25%. Lagarde said the decision was driven by better-than-expected economic data across the euro zone. The Sintra gathering, an annual central banking conference in Portugal, has become a venue for major policy signals. This year, the ECB delivered a hike that markets had largely priced in.

Growth, not crypto

Lagarde's prepared statement and Q&A session focused entirely on inflation, wage growth, and the region's recovery trajectory. She described the growth outlook as improved, but offered no new guidance on future rate moves. Notably absent was any reference to crypto assets, stablecoins, or digital euro development — topics that have surfaced in past ECB communications.

What crypto traders are left with

For digital-asset markets, the lack of a crypto-specific comment is itself a data point. The ECB has been among the more vocal central banks on crypto regulation, but this time Lagarde chose to stay silent. That could be read as a signal that the bank sees no immediate systemic risk from crypto, or simply that the rate decision dominated the agenda. Either way, traders scanning for policy cues got none.

The next ECB meeting is scheduled for September. Until then, the Sintra hike and the growth upgrade are the only fresh inputs — and crypto remains off the official transcript.
