Four crypto-related companies are in the running for spots in this year's Russell indexes, according to information released this week. Sharplink, Forward Industries, Bitmine, and Galaxy Digital are among the firms being considered for inclusion as part of the annual index reconstitution.
The Russell 1000, which tracks the largest 1,000 U.S. companies — names like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple — is the target for two of them. Bitmine and Galaxy Digital may be eligible for that benchmark, while all four could land in broader small-cap or micro-cap Russell indexes.
The Candidates
Sharplink and Forward Industries are smaller players relative to the crypto heavyweights. Sharplink operates a crypto mining and digital infrastructure business. Forward Industries focuses on mobile accessories and has recently pivoted into crypto-related hardware. Both are being evaluated for the smaller Russell indexes.
Bitmine and Galaxy Digital are more established. Bitmine, a Bitcoin mining firm, and Galaxy Digital, a diversified crypto financial services firm, both trade on U.S. exchanges. Their market capitalizations put them in contention for the Russell 1000, which would place them alongside the largest U.S. public companies.
This isn't the first time crypto firms have made the cut. But the list of candidates keeps growing as more traditional finance products — ETFs, index funds — track these benchmarks. Inclusion means automatic buying by passive funds, which can boost trading volume and liquidity.
What Inclusion Means
Landing in a Russell index is a big deal for any company. Passive funds that track the Russell 1000 or the broader Russell 3000 rebalance their portfolios to match the index. That creates a predictable wave of buying on the effective date.
For crypto firms, it also signals mainstream acceptance. Being listed alongside Nvidia and Apple gives them visibility with institutional investors who might otherwise shy away from the sector. It doesn't guarantee price gains, but it does put the stock on the radar of fund managers.
Galaxy Digital, in particular, has been pushing into traditional finance. The firm recently expanded its asset management arm and now manages billions in crypto and digital asset strategies. A Russell 1000 spot would be another step toward legitimacy.
The Timeline
Russell's annual reconstitution is a closely watched event. The company evaluates all eligible U.S. stocks based on market cap as of the end of May. The preliminary list of additions and deletions is expected in the coming weeks, with the final changes taking effect after the close on a Friday in late June.
The affected companies haven't commented publicly on the potential inclusion. For now, the four crypto firms remain under consideration. The final decision will come when Russell publishes its updated lineup.
