US gasoline prices surged by $1 amid rising tensions with Iran. The jump comes as Brent crude oil traded at $84.23, and a prediction market now gives a 15.5% chance that crude will reach a new all-time high by December 31.
What drove the price spike
The $1 increase at the pump reflects growing fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East. Iran, a major oil producer, has been at the center of escalating geopolitical risks. Traders are pricing in the possibility of a broader conflict that could choke off shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil flows.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, has already climbed above $84. The move higher follows weeks of diplomatic tensions and military posturing. No new sanctions or production cuts have been announced, but the market is reacting to the threat alone.
What the prediction market says
A leading prediction market now puts the odds of crude oil hitting a new all-time high by year-end at 15.5%. That's a notable shift from earlier in the year, when the probability was in the single digits. The all-time high for Brent crude is $147.50, set in July 2008. Reaching that level would require a further rally of roughly 75% from current prices.
The same market gives a 5% chance that oil will exceed $150 a barrel by December 31. While still a long shot, the odds have doubled since the start of the Iran crisis.
Impact on US drivers
The $1 surge means the average gallon of regular now costs about $3.85, up from $2.85 a year ago. For a typical 15-gallon fill-up, that's an extra $15. The increase is hitting households just as summer driving season begins.
Gasoline prices tend to follow crude oil, but with a lag. If Brent stays above $84, further increases at the pump are likely. The Energy Information Administration has not issued a new forecast since the latest tensions erupted.
The situation remains fluid. No diplomatic breakthrough has been announced, and Iran has not signaled any change in its stance. For now, drivers are paying the price of uncertainty.
