Global Government Bond Issuance Hits Record $504 Billion in First Half of 2026

Global government bond issuance hit a record $504 billion in the first half of 2026, with Italy alone accounting for $81 billion. The total, the highest ever for a six-month period, underscores the continued reliance on debt markets by sovereign borrowers.

Italy leads the pack

Italy was the biggest issuer among the countries tracked, selling $81 billion in government bonds during the first six months of the year. That put Rome ahead of other large developed and emerging economies. The Italian government has been a regular presence in bond markets, using auctions and syndications to meet its financing needs.

Record pace across the board

The $504 billion figure represents a new milestone for global government bond issuance. The previous record for a half-year period was set in the second half of 2025, when issuance reached $485 billion. The first-half 2026 total surpasses that by nearly 4%. Bond sales have been driven by a mix of refinancing maturing debt and covering budget deficits. Yields have remained relatively stable, providing an attractive window for borrowers.

Investors have absorbed the supply without major disruption, though some analysts noted that the pace could test market capacity if it continues. The data covers 34 countries. The second-half outlook will depend on fiscal plans and interest rate moves in the months ahead.
