K2 Space has secured $500 million in new funding, the company confirmed, pushing its valuation to $7 billion as it doubles down on building large satellites for commercial and defense customers. The round signals a broader shift in the aerospace industry toward bigger, more capable spacecraft and deeper ties with government security agencies.

Mega satellites and a $7B valuation

The fresh capital brings K2 Space's total funding to over $1.5 billion. The company plans to use the money to accelerate production of its mega satellite platform, which can host payloads weighing several tons and generate tens of kilowatts of power. That's a departure from the small-satellite trend that dominated the industry in recent years.

K2 Space's valuation of $7 billion places it among the most valuable private space companies. The round was led by existing investors, though the company declined to name new backers. The funding comes as the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations look for more resilient, high-capacity satellite architectures.

Why the shift to mega satellites

For years, the aerospace sector focused on shrinking satellites. Companies like SpaceX and Planet Labs proved that small birds could do a lot. But K2 Space is betting that bigger is better for certain jobs — especially those requiring heavy sensors, powerful antennas, or long-duration missions.

Mega satellites can carry more fuel, more electronics, and more redundancy. That makes them attractive for military customers who need secure communications and persistent surveillance. The company has already secured contracts with the U.S. Space Force and other defense agencies.

Defense partnerships driving growth

The funding highlights a shift in the aerospace industry toward innovation and strategic defense partnerships. K2 Space isn't alone — other startups are also chasing Pentagon dollars. But the company's focus on large platforms sets it apart from competitors building constellations of small satellites.

K2 Space's mega satellite design can be assembled in orbit, allowing it to bypass the size limits of existing rocket fairings. That capability could be key for future missions that require large antennas or solar arrays. The company says it will begin launching operational satellites within two years.

The new funding round will support expansion of its manufacturing facility in Southern California and hiring for engineering and production roles. K2 Space currently employs about 400 people.

The company's next major milestone is a demonstration mission for the Space Force, scheduled for late next year. That flight will test the mega satellite's ability to host multiple payloads and operate in geostationary orbit.
