Metaplanet, the Japanese investment firm that's been stacking Bitcoin since 2024, is buying Siiibo Securities for $13 million. The acquisition, announced under the banner of Project Nova, is aimed at building a full Bitcoin financial ecosystem targeting Japan. It's a big step for a company that started as a hotel operator and now wants to be a one-stop shop for Bitcoin in one of the world's most regulated crypto markets.
Project Nova and the Siiibo Deal
The $13 million price tag gets Metaplanet a licensed securities firm. Siiibo Securities is a Japanese financial instruments business, meaning it's regulated by the Financial Services Agency. That license is the key asset here — it lets Metaplanet offer services that a plain corporate entity can't. The deal is structured under Project Nova, which the company has been teasing for months as its plan to expand beyond just holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet.
Building a Bitcoin Financial Ecosystem
Metaplanet's vision is straightforward: use Siiibo's license to offer Bitcoin brokerage, custody, and eventually lending and yield products. The target is Japanese retail and institutional investors who want Bitcoin exposure but prefer dealing with a regulated local entity. Japan's crypto rules are strict — exchanges need to register, segregate customer assets, and follow AML rules. Having a securities license on top of that gives Metaplanet a wider runway. The company has said it wants to create a "Bitcoin-first financial ecosystem" — a phrase that suggests they're thinking beyond simple trading.
What This Means for Metaplanet
Metaplanet has been on a Bitcoin buying spree since 2024, amassing over 1,000 BTC. But holding Bitcoin is one thing; making money from services around it is another. The Siiibo acquisition gives them a regulated platform to generate revenue from fees, spreads, and potentially interest income. It also differentiates them from pure-play crypto exchanges like bitFlyer or Coincheck, which operate under different licenses. For a company that's been criticized for being just a "Bitcoin proxy stock," this is a concrete move toward building actual business lines.
The Japanese Crypto Landscape
Japan was an early adopter of crypto regulation, but the market has been cautious since the Coincheck hack in 2018. Still, institutions are slowly moving in. Metaplanet's move could accelerate that — a listed company offering Bitcoin services through a regulated securities firm is a template others might follow. The timing isn't bad: Bitcoin is trading above $70,000, and Japanese retail investors have shown interest through the country's tax-advantaged NISA accounts, though those don't directly hold crypto.
The deal is expected to close in the coming months, pending FSA approval. Metaplanet hasn't said exactly what products will launch first, but the integration of Siiibo's systems and staff is already underway. For a company that's been all about buying Bitcoin, this is the first real test of whether it can build something around it.
