Oil Breaches $100 as Trump Considers Major Military Action Against Iran

Oil prices surged past $100 a barrel on Monday after the Financial Times reported that President Trump is weighing major military action against Iran. The move has injected fresh uncertainty into global energy markets, where traders are now pricing in a nearly one-in-five chance that crude will hit a new all-time high by year-end.

The $100 Milestone

Brent crude, the international benchmark, crossed the triple-digit mark for the first time since 2014. The jump came after the FT report, which cited unnamed U.S. officials saying Trump had discussed plans for a significant strike on Iranian military targets. The White House has not confirmed the report, but the market is already reacting.

Trump's Iran Calculus

The president has long taken a hard line against Tehran, withdrawing from the nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposing sanctions. A direct military confrontation would risk disrupting oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for about a fifth of the world's petroleum. Iran has threatened to block the strait in the past.

Betting on a Record

A prediction market contract on whether oil will reach a new all-time high by December 31 is trading at 19.5% YES. The current record is $147.27, set in July 2008. The contract's price implies that traders see a real, though not yet probable, chance of that happening. Any escalation in the Middle East could quickly shift those odds.

The White House has not commented on the report. Oil markets will be watching for any official statements or military movements in the coming days.
