S&P 500 Delays Fast-Track Inclusion of SpaceX by at Least One Year

The S&P 500 has put off plans to fast track SpaceX's addition to the benchmark index for at least a year, pushing any potential inclusion further into the future. The index operator won't be adding the private space company on an expedited basis anytime soon, according to a decision made this week.

What the delay means

Index watchers had been watching for a possible fast-track move that would have brought the company into the S&P 500 ahead of its regular quarterly rebalancing schedule. That path is now blocked until at least late 2025. The S&P 500 didn't give a reason for the postponement.

Fast tracking allows the index committee to add a company outside the normal review window when certain conditions are met — typically involving a major corporate event or a surge in market cap. SpaceX isn't publicly traded, which complicates any inclusion. The index's usual rules require a company to have a public float and a track record of profitability, among other criteria.

SpaceX's private status

SpaceX remains one of the world's most valuable private companies, valued at roughly $180 billion in its most recent funding round. Without a public stock listing, it can't meet the S&P 500's standard eligibility requirements. A fast-track inclusion would have required a special exception — one that the index committee now says won't happen for at least another year.

For investors who had hoped to gain exposure to SpaceX through index funds, the delay is a letdown. Passive portfolios that track the S&P 500 will continue to have no direct stake in the company. Those looking for a piece of SpaceX will have to rely on private-market investments or secondary shares.

What comes next

The S&P 500's decision doesn't rule out SpaceX joining the index through normal channels in the future. That would likely require the company to go public first, something CEO Elon Musk has said is not an immediate priority. SpaceX last raised private capital in early 2024.

For now, the index committee has closed the door on accelerated entry. A new timeline hasn't been announced, and the earliest possible window for a regular addition remains several years out.
