South Africa's central bank has halted immediate plans for a digital rand despite successful technical trials. Officials say there's no urgent need to launch the cryptocurrency now. Instead, the South African Reserve Bank will concentrate resources on its Payshap real-time payment system.
Digital Rand Delay Confirmed
The SARB has officially paused the digital rand's implementation timeline. This comes after months of testing showed the project works technically. An SARB official stressed there's no compelling reason to rush the rollout. The bank sees no immediate crisis requiring a central bank digital currency.
Payshap Takes Center Stage
Real-time payments will get top priority over the digital rand for the foreseeable future. SARB official Cassim is directing efforts toward enhancing Payshap's capabilities. The bank believes improving existing infrastructure delivers faster benefits than launching a new currency. Payshap already handles instant transfers between major South African banks.
Privacy Versus Speed Dilemma
Technical trials exposed difficult tradeoffs in the digital rand project. Increased transaction speed required reduced privacy protections. The SARB found it couldn't optimize both elements simultaneously. This tension made the digital currency less appealing compared to Payshap's current framework.
The central bank hasn't set a date for revisiting the digital rand. Cassim's team will instead push Payshap's expansion to more financial institutions in the coming months.
