Sequoia Capital is putting $1 billion into Valar Atomics, a nuclear reactor startup, in what the firm calls a bet on atomic energy to meet the surging electricity needs of artificial intelligence. The funding round, one of the largest ever for a nuclear technology company, signals that investors see reactors as a practical answer to the power demands of data centers and AI training clusters.

Why nuclear for AI

AI models consume enormous amounts of electricity. Training a single large language model can use as much power as hundreds of homes in a year. As companies race to deploy more AI, the grid is struggling to keep up. Nuclear reactors offer a steady, carbon-free source of power that can run around the clock, unlike solar or wind. Valar Atomics aims to build small modular reactors that can be sited near data centers, cutting transmission losses and providing dedicated power.

What Valar Atomics does

The company is developing advanced nuclear reactors designed for rapid deployment. Its technology focuses on safety and cost reduction, using a design that the firm says can be factory-built and shipped to sites. Valar Atomics has not yet received regulatory approval for any of its designs, but the new funding will go toward scaling production and preparing for licensing applications. The company has not disclosed a timeline for when its first reactor might come online.

The investment details

Sequoia is leading the $1 billion round, with participation from other investors that the company declined to name. The money will be used to expand manufacturing capacity, hire engineers, and fund research. Valar Atomics has previously raised smaller amounts from venture firms and government grants. The new valuation was not disclosed.

Valar Atomics plans to submit its reactor design to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for pre-application review within the next 12 months. The company is also in talks with several large technology firms about potential power purchase agreements. If those deals go through, construction on the first reactor could begin as early as 2028, pending regulatory approvals.
