This week, the hedge fund Situational Awareness disclosed a 67% loss after doubling down on concentrated artificial intelligence bets. The fund was forced to sell roughly $16 billion in assets to Citadel at a steep discount, marking one of the largest forced liquidations in recent memory. The collapse is already raising questions about investor confidence in tech-heavy strategies and could spill over into crypto markets that have been closely tracking AI-related tokens and infrastructure plays.
The AI bet that backfired
Situational Awareness had built its entire strategy around a handful of AI companies, betting that the sector would continue its rapid growth. Instead, a combination of regulatory headwinds, slowing adoption, and a broader tech selloff wiped out more than two-thirds of the fund's value. The fund's managers did not publicly comment on the loss, but the scale of the damage suggests they were caught off guard by the speed of the downturn.
Fire sale to Citadel
To cover margin calls and redemptions, Situational Awareness sold its remaining portfolio to Citadel at a deep discount. The $16 billion transaction, one of the largest block trades of the year, effectively transferred the fund's holdings to one of Wall Street's biggest market makers. Citadel has not disclosed what it plans to do with the assets, but the sale likely added downward pressure on the already-struggling AI stocks.
The collapse of a major hedge fund with a concentrated tech thesis doesn't happen in a vacuum. Crypto markets have been increasingly intertwined with AI narratives — tokens tied to AI projects, decentralized compute networks, and data storage protocols have all seen volatility this year. If institutional investors pull back from risk-on assets in the wake of the Situational Awareness blowup, crypto could feel the pinch. The timing isn't great: the broader market was already jittery about interest rates and regulatory uncertainty.
Regulators are likely to take a closer look at how funds disclose concentration risk, especially in fast-moving sectors like AI. For now, the market is watching to see whether other funds with similar strategies are exposed. Situational Awareness's investors are left with little more than a lesson in the dangers of putting all eggs in one basket — even a basket as shiny as artificial intelligence.
