SK hynix Shares Plunge 12.8% After Record Earnings Miss Consensus

SK hynix shares tumbled about 12.8% on July 29, wiping out billions in market value after the chipmaker posted record quarterly revenue and profit that still fell short of analyst expectations. The selloff dragged South Korea's KOSPI index down sharply, with losses reaching as deep as 12.6% around the earnings print.

Record numbers, but not enough

For the second quarter of 2026, SK hynix reported revenue of ₩79.3187 trillion, operating profit of ₩60.5426 trillion, and net profit of ₩93.9226 trillion — all all-time highs. But the market was looking for more. LSEG SmartEstimate consensus had pegged revenue at roughly ₩84 trillion and operating profit at about ₩64 trillion. The gap between reported figures and those estimates triggered a sharp reassessment.

Investors had piled into SK hynix shares ahead of the earnings, betting on continued strength in memory chip demand. When the numbers came in below those elevated hopes, the stock got hit hard. The 12.8% intraday drop was one of the steepest single-day declines for the company in recent years.

ADR offering overhang

Earlier in July, SK hynix completed a large U.S. ADR offering worth roughly ₩40 trillion, or about US$26.5 billion. That deal added a fresh supply of shares to the market, creating an overhang that weighed on sentiment even before the earnings miss. The combination of a disappointing print and the recent equity offering left the stock with little support.

Broader market rout

The selloff wasn't isolated to SK hynix. The KOSPI index slumped sharply on the same day, with falls as deep as 12.6%. Analysts pointed to crowded positioning in Korean tech stocks and a broader risk-off mood as contributing factors. The earnings miss acted as a trigger, but the market was already vulnerable after a strong run.

What investors are watching now

The episode offers a playbook for analyzing earnings-driven selloffs. Key steps include comparing reported figures to consensus, reviewing any forward guidance the company provides, and monitoring overall market conditions. For SK hynix, the next few trading sessions will show whether the stock can stabilize or if further selling pressure emerges. Investors will be watching for any updates on demand trends and capacity plans from the company.
