StanChart, HSBC Execute First Live Transaction on Swift's Blockchain Ledger

Standard Chartered and HSBC have completed the first live transaction on Swift's blockchain ledger, connecting their separate tokenized deposit systems. The move, announced this week, is a step toward interoperable, 24/7 cross-border payments.

Inside the transaction

The transaction linked StanChart's and HSBC's tokenized deposit platforms through Swift's ledger. Tokenized deposits are digital representations of commercial bank money, and until now they've mostly lived in isolated systems. This test shows they can move across a shared rail.

Cross-border payments today are slow, expensive, and often require a chain of correspondent banks. A shared ledger that tokenized deposits can travel over could change that. The banks said the transaction marks a step toward interoperable, 24/7 cross-border payments.

The transaction is a proof of concept, not a commercial service. The banks have not announced a commercial rollout. The next question is whether other banks will join the network and how quickly the infrastructure scales.
