Tata Electronics has partnered with Dutch chip-equipment maker ASML to build India's first semiconductor fabrication plant. The collaboration is part of a push to reduce the country's heavy reliance on imported chips and strengthen its position in global tech supply chains.
Pushing for chip self-reliance
The joint effort aims to boost India's semiconductor self-reliance. Currently, India imports nearly all of its chip requirements. A domestic fab would allow the country to produce its own advanced chips, cutting dependence on foreign suppliers and insulating the economy from global shortages.
Geopolitical stakes
Beyond economics, the plant carries strategic weight. India has been working to position itself as an alternative manufacturing hub amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China. Building a domestic semiconductor industry could give New Delhi more leverage in trade negotiations and reduce vulnerability to supply chain disruptions.
