Tempus AI to Acquire Personalis in $1.5B Deal to Boost Cancer Testing

Tempus AI to Acquire Personalis in $1.5B Deal to Boost Cancer Testing

Tempus AI has agreed to buy Personalis for $1.5 billion, a move aimed at expanding its capabilities in cancer minimal residual disease (MRD) testing. The deal positions the company to tap into what it sees as a $20 billion market for AI-driven precision oncology.

Why the acquisition matters

MRD testing looks for tiny traces of cancer DNA left in a patient's blood after treatment. It's a fast-growing area because it can catch recurrence earlier than traditional scans. Tempus AI already uses artificial intelligence to analyze clinical and genomic data, and adding Personalis's MRD technology gives it a direct play in that space.

What Personalis brings

Personalis has developed a test called NeXT Personal, which detects circulating tumor DNA at very low levels. The company's platform is built around whole-genome sequencing and personalized tumor-informed assays. Tempus AI plans to integrate that into its own suite of precision oncology tools.

The market opportunity

Tempus AI is targeting a $20 billion market with its AI-driven approach. The company believes combining its data platform with Personalis's MRD test will let it offer a more complete picture of a patient's cancer status over time. That could help doctors decide whether to continue, switch, or stop treatments.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
