Tesla reported a $112 million pretax unrealized loss on its digital assets in the second quarter of 2026, driven by the fair-value accounting standard that now applies to its Bitcoin holdings. The loss reduced earnings for common stockholders by $87 million after tax, or $0.02 per diluted share. The carrying value of Tesla's digital assets dropped to $674 million as of June 30, down from $786 million three months earlier.
The accounting rule behind the swing
Under the FASB crypto-asset standard, covered holdings are measured at fair value each reporting period, with changes recognized in net income. That means Tesla's Bitcoin position is marked to market every quarter, and the swings hit the bottom line directly. It's a double-edged sword: in Q4 2024, the same treatment contributed a $600 million lift to GAAP net income. This quarter, the market moved the other way.
What Tesla didn't say
Tesla's Q2 shareholder deck did not disclose a coin count or any digital-asset disposition. As of March 31, 2026, Bitcoin made up the majority of Tesla's digital assets, including 11,509 BTC acquired for $386 million. Whether the company sold any of those coins during the quarter remains unknown. The investor-relations page had no Q2 Form 10-Q as of July 23, so the full details aren't public yet.
A small piece of a big balance sheet
The $674 million digital-asset balance represented about 0.454% of Tesla's $148.524 billion in total assets at quarter-end. That's a tiny slice. Tesla is not operating like a dedicated Bitcoin treasury company — it's an automaker that happens to hold some crypto. The adjusted EBITDA figure of $3.273 billion added back the full $112 million digital-asset loss, underscoring that the company's core operations aren't tied to Bitcoin's price.
The next primary filing will be important for any updated Bitcoin unit count or transaction disclosure. Investors will be watching to see if Tesla held its 11,509 BTC through the quarter or trimmed its position. Until the 10-Q lands, the only certainty is that the accounting standard will keep producing these quarterly swings.
