UBS: Micron Could Generate $400B+ in Free Cash Flow, Buy Back Over 40% of Shares by 2028

UBS analysts project that Micron Technology will generate more than $400 billion in free cash flow from 2027 through 2029. That sum, they say, could be enough to fund a buyback of over 40% of the company's outstanding shares by 2028.

The scale of the cash flow

The projection covers a three-year window starting in 2027. UBS did not specify the exact annual breakdown, but the cumulative figure of $400 billion+ dwarfs Micron's current market capitalization of roughly $100 billion. The analysts see the memory chip maker's earnings power surging as demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other advanced chips accelerates.

How the buyback could work

If Micron uses the cash flow to repurchase shares, UBS estimates the company could retire more than 40% of its outstanding stock by the end of 2028. That would significantly reduce the share count, boosting earnings per share even if net income stays flat. The bank did not say whether Micron would actually execute such a buyback, only that the cash flow makes it feasible.

A buyback of that magnitude would signal strong confidence from management and return a large chunk of capital to shareholders. It could also make the stock more attractive to value-oriented funds. But the projection depends on Micron maintaining its competitive edge in memory chips through the rest of the decade. The company faces cyclical downturns and intense competition from Samsung and SK Hynix.

Micron has not commented on the UBS forecast. The company typically provides its own capital allocation plans during earnings calls. Its next quarterly report is expected in late March.
