The uranium spot price is holding at $85, and a new platform aims to bring the commodity to blockchain. Uranium Digital announced plans to launch tokenized uranium trading on the Solana network, betting that rising demand from AI data centers will boost nuclear energy's appeal.
Why tokenize uranium?
Tokenization allows investors to buy and sell digital representations of physical uranium without handling the radioactive material directly. Uranium Digital says the move will lower barriers for smaller investors and increase liquidity in a market traditionally dominated by utilities and large financial players. The company plans to back each token with physical uranium stored in licensed facilities.
The Solana choice
Uranium Digital selected Solana for its high throughput and low transaction costs. The blockchain can process thousands of transactions per second, which the company says is essential for a commodity market that needs fast settlement. Solana's growing ecosystem of decentralized finance tools also offers potential for lending, borrowing, and hedging against uranium tokens.
AI's role in nuclear's revival
The push comes as AI data centers drive a surge in electricity demand. Tech giants are increasingly looking to nuclear power as a reliable, carbon-free source to run their facilities. That demand has helped push uranium prices higher and revived interest in new reactor projects. Uranium Digital's tokenized market could give investors a new way to bet on that trend.
The company has not yet announced a launch date for the platform. Regulatory approval will be needed before the tokens can trade publicly. For now, the uranium spot price holds at $85, and the industry watches to see whether blockchain can bring a new kind of liquidity to the nuclear fuel market.
