US Military Prepares to Lift Strait of Hormuz Blockade if Iran Deal Is Signed

The US military is drawing up plans to lift its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz — but only if a new Iran nuclear deal gets signed. The preparations, confirmed through military planning channels, signal a possible major shift in the region's security posture.

Strategic waterway at the center

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Roughly a fifth of the world's oil moves through it. A blockade there effectively chokes off crude from Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE. US Navy warships have enforced the restrictions for years as part of broader sanctions against Tehran.

Lifting that blockade would remove one of the most physical pressures on Iran. It would also open the waterway to normal commercial traffic, easing insurance costs and shipping delays that have rippled through global energy markets.

Deal conditions

The blockade's removal is tied directly to the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 nuclear deal that limited Iran's uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. Talks have dragged on for months in Vienna, with disagreements over verification, missile programs and the scope of sanctions relief.

If the deal is finalized, the military is ready to pull back its naval forces from the strait. No specific timeline has been set, but the planning is operational — not just theoretical.

The blockade isn't the only issue. Other US sanctions — on banking, oil exports and individuals — would also need to be addressed. But the Strait of Hormuz is the most visible, high-stakes lever. Removing it would be a concrete gesture that the deal is actually in effect.

What remains unclear is whether the negotiations will reach a conclusion. Iran has continued enriching uranium, and the US has insisted on strict inspections. Until a final text is signed, the blockade stays in place.
