1inch to Shut Down Crypto Card Service, Sets Dec. 18 Withdrawal Deadline

1inch is closing its crypto card service and has told users to withdraw their balances by December 18. The DEX aggregator hasn't said what prompted the decision. For anyone who's been topping up the card and tapping it at checkout, the clock is now running.

The wind-down puts a public end date on one of 1inch's consumer-facing products, and it lands in a corner of crypto that has never been especially easy to run.

A deadline, not a grace period

December 18 is the date users need to circle. That's the withdrawal deadline 1inch has set for balances still sitting in the card service. After that, the operational picture gets less clear for anyone who hasn't moved their funds.

1inch hasn't detailed what happens to balances left behind after the cutoff. That gap matters. Crypto card products typically hold user funds in an account that has to be swept out when the service goes dark, and users who miss the window are left hoping there's a manual recovery process on the other side.

Why payments are hard to bolt onto DeFi

Card services aren't a natural fit for a DEX aggregator. A card runs on settlement rails, compliance checks and issuing partners — plumbing that has little to do with routing swaps across liquidity pools. Each of those pieces brings a dependency, and each dependency is a way for the product to break or become more expensive than it's worth.

The closure points to exactly that tangle. Running a payment card means coordinating with processors and issuers, handling chargebacks and managing regulatory expectations across jurisdictions. DeFi-native teams often find that the operational load outweighs the revenue, especially when the card is a side product rather than the core business.

1inch built its name on aggregation. The card was an attempt to push that brand into everyday spending. Shutting it down trims the consumer surface back toward the core swap product.

What it costs in trust

Every discontinued product is a small withdrawal from the trust account. Users who loaded funds onto the card and now have a hard deadline to move them will think twice before adopting the next 1inch consumer offering. The same goes for partners who integrated the card into their own flows.

The market effect is likely to be contained. A single card shutdown doesn't reshape the payments sector. But it adds to a running tally of crypto payment experiments that didn't stick, and that tally shapes how the next one gets received.

The date to watch

For now, the only hard commitment on the table is December 18. Users holding card balances should treat it as a firm cutoff and move funds before then rather than after. Whether 1inch explains the reasoning behind the shutdown, or lays out a plan for balances that remain after the deadline, is still open. Neither has been announced.
