21Shares Lists Anthropic-Tied ETP on Vienna MTF Under Ticker CLAU

21Shares has listed a new exchange-traded product on the Vienna MTF that gives investors exposure to Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude model. The ETP trades under the ticker CLAU. The product carries a 1% annual management fee, and investors also absorb financing and funding costs tied to the derivatives inside it.

What CLAU actually holds

This isn't a plain-vanilla equity tracker. CLAU holds FalconX notes that are themselves tied to perpetual futures. Perpetual futures are swap-like contracts that track an underlying asset without an expiry date, and they're a common tool for getting exposure to private or hard-to-access names. Because those contracts need to be rolled and hedged, they generate funding costs — the periodic payments between long and short positions — plus financing charges on the notes. Those costs aren't covered by the 1% fee; they flow through to the investor on top of it.

A backdoor into a private AI company

Anthropic isn't publicly traded, so there's no conventional share to buy. The FalconX note structure is one way to build a listed product that moves with the company's perceived value without a direct equity listing. 21Shares has used Vienna's MTF — a multilateral trading facility rather than a full regulated exchange — as the venue. That's a lighter-touch listing route than a main market, and it's where a number of crypto and alternative-asset products have found a home in Europe.

The cost stack matters

A 1% annual fee puts CLAU at the higher end of plain index ETPs but well below many thematic or alternative products. The problem is that it isn't the whole bill. Perpetual futures funding rates can swing sharply depending on market positioning — when the trade gets crowded, longs pay more, and that drag shows up in the product's performance. Financing on the FalconX notes adds another layer. For a buy-and-hold investor, those two lines can quietly exceed the headline fee over a full year.

Who this is for — and who it isn't

CLAU isn't a core holding. It's a satellite position for someone who already has a diversified portfolio and wants a slice of Anthropic's story without waiting for an IPO. It also suits traders who want a listed, exchange-traded wrapper rather than a private placement. It doesn't suit anyone who needs transparent, low-cost exposure to a defined basket of stocks, or anyone uncomfortable with counterparty risk. The FalconX notes are obligations of FalconX, not of Anthropic, and not of 21Shares' own balance sheet in the way a physically backed ETP would be. If FalconX runs into trouble, the note structure is what stands between the investor and the underlying exposure.

What to watch

21Shares hasn't said whether CLAU will be passported into other European markets or listed elsewhere. Trading on the Vienna MTF is live now. The numbers that will tell the story are the product's assets under management over the next few quarters, and how much drag the funding and financing costs actually add. Both will show up in the ETP's published performance versus its stated benchmark — if 21Shares publishes one. Until then, anyone buying CLAU should read the fee section twice, because the 1% is the smaller half of the cost.
