Abstract Chain to Shut Down December 15 as Igloo Pivots to Pudgy Penguins

Abstract, the consumer-focused blockchain launched by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo Inc., will go offline on December 15, 2026, the team announced this week. Users must bridge their assets off the chain before that date or lose access to them. The shutdown caps a nearly three-year run that Igloo funded for the past 18 months.

Why Igloo pulled the plug

The Abstract team blamed a restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity, minimal institutional crossover, and a limited budget. CEO Luca Netz said Igloo lost tens of millions of dollars over two years building consumer products and never found product-market fit.

The company weighed launching a token or an ICO for Abstract and decided against both. That's a notable call given how many L2s in recent years have tried to bootstrap activity with an airdrop. Igloo looked at the playbook and passed.

Netz said Igloo will now put its full attention on "making Pudgy Penguins into the global & cultural phenomenon I know it can become." He didn't specify what that shift looks like in practice.

Pudgy NFTs rip, PENGU sags

The market's reaction was split. Following the announcement, the Pudgy Penguins NFT floor price climbed from about 3.07 ETH to 3.37 ETH. The collection logged 69 sales and 237 ETH in volume — roughly ten times a normal day. Traders clearly read the pivot as a return to the core asset.

The PENGU token told a different story. It fell 4.17% over 24 hours to $0.00917. PENGU now trades about 87% below its all-time high of $0.06845, set on December 17, 2024.

A brutal year for chain shutdowns

Abstract isn't alone. RootData's tracker listed 347 crypto projects that stopped operating, went bankrupt, or went offline for long periods in 2026, as of its August 24 update. Harmony announced its shutdown in September 2026, and Blast set an October 26 withdrawal deadline.

For Abstract users, the clock is the only thing that matters now. Bridge assets off before December 15. After that, the chain is gone and so is anything left on it.
