What the upgrade targets
Transaction finality is the point at which a transaction is considered irreversible. In many blockchain networks, that confirmation takes several seconds. The Alpenglow upgrade is designed to compress that window to 150 milliseconds, a change that would make the network feel nearly instant.
The current 12.8-second finality is already faster than some systems, but the upgrade aims to go much further. A 150-millisecond finality would mean a transaction is confirmed in the time it takes to blink. For applications that depend on quick confirmations, the difference is significant.
Why speed matters
Faster finality reduces the risk of double-spending and lets users act on a transaction sooner. It also opens the door to use cases that require near-real-time settlement, such as point-of-sale payments or automated trading. The upgrade doesn't change how transactions work, only how quickly they're locked in.
The Alpenglow upgrade is still in the works. No release date has been announced, and the network continues to operate with its current finality time. When the upgrade does arrive, it will be measured against its 150-millisecond target.
