Altcoin Dominance Nears Long-Term Support, but Altseason Signals Still Missing

Altcoin dominance — the share of total crypto market cap held by tokens outside the top 10 — is trading near the lower boundary of a multiyear rising channel, a zone that has historically acted as a launchpad for rotation into smaller assets. But right now, the data isn't cooperating: Bitcoin dominance sits at 59.9% on CoinMarketCap, and the Altcoin Season Index is stuck at 38, far below the 75 threshold that would officially call an altseason.

Where altcoin dominance stands

The metric that tracks all coins excluding the top 10 is currently around 0.10 of Bitcoin's market cap. That's the same relative area where the floor held before the 2021 altcoin rotation kicked off. The pattern is visible on long-term charts: a rising channel that has guided dominance higher since the last cycle's bottom. Being near the lower edge doesn't guarantee a bounce, but it's where traders start paying attention.

The two signals that mattered in 2017 and 2021

Before the two biggest altseasons on record, two confirmation signals appeared. First, the ETH/BTC pair bottomed out. Second, stablecoin liquidity began expanding as Bitcoin dominance started to decline. Right now, neither signal is fully in place. ETH/BTC hasn't found a clear floor yet, meaning Ethereum is still lagging Bitcoin in relative terms. And while stablecoin supply data isn't flashing a surge, the broader liquidity picture remains unclear.

What analyst Cryptollica sees ahead

One analyst, Cryptollica, projects that altcoin dominance excluding the top 10 could break out from its current channel and rally to the upper trendline — potentially reaching between 0.6 and 0.8 of Bitcoin's market cap. That would represent a massive shift in capital flows, but it's contingent on the two missing signals materializing first. Without a confirmed ETH/BTC bottom and growing stablecoin reserves, the breakout remains a forecast, not a fact.

The question now is whether the market will repeat the pattern or break it. The next few weeks will show whether ETH/BTC can find its footing — or whether Bitcoin continues to hog the spotlight.
