Aztec Network has upgraded to Alpha V5, bringing a full private execution environment to its Ethereum Layer 2. The upgrade introduces client-side proving, which doubles the speed of private transactions and cuts costs by 50%.
What Alpha V5 brings
The new version delivers a complete private execution environment on Aztec's L2. That means users can run smart contracts privately — not just hide balances, but keep the logic and inputs of transactions confidential. The key technical change is client-side proving, which shifts proof generation from the network to the user's device. This removes a bottleneck that previously slowed down private transactions.
Faster and cheaper
Aztec says the upgrade makes private transactions twice as fast as before. The cost reduction is equally sharp: private transactions now cost 50% less. For a network that positions itself as the privacy layer for Ethereum, those numbers matter. Lower fees and higher speed remove two of the biggest barriers to using private L2s in practice.
Privacy on Ethereum L2s has been a niche feature, often too slow or expensive for everyday use. Aztec's Alpha V5 directly addresses that. By making private execution faster and cheaper, the network could attract developers building DeFi, payments, or identity applications that need confidentiality. The upgrade also keeps Aztec competitive with other privacy-focused L2s that have been rolling out similar features.
