Base Launches Tool That Lets AI Agents Move Crypto and Check Balances

Base has rolled out a new tool that connects crypto wallets to AI agents, letting models transfer funds, swap tokens, check balances, and review transaction history. The move puts the Coinbase-backed layer-2 network at the center of the growing overlap between blockchain infrastructure and autonomous AI systems.

What the tool does

The integration effectively gives an AI agent the ability to act on behalf of a wallet owner. Instead of a human signing each transaction, the AI can execute token swaps, send payments, or pull account data through a direct connection. Base says the tool is designed to work with existing wallet setups and doesn't require a separate smart contract deployment for every use case.

AI agents have mostly operated off-chain, cut off from the payment rails and financial primitives that crypto provides. Base's tool bridges that gap. A trading bot could rebalance a portfolio without human intervention. A freelance AI assistant could pay for API credits on the fly. The use cases are still early, but the infrastructure is now live.

The tool is available immediately for developers building on Base. No further updates on specific integrations or partner projects have been announced. The real test will be whether builders adopt it to create agents that manage real value autonomously — and how the industry handles the inevitable questions around permissions and custody that come with giving AI control of wallets.
