Base's Jesse Pollak Admits He Was Wrong, Hands Consumer App Back to Coinbase

On July 15, 2026, Jesse Pollak admitted he was 'definitively wrong' about Base's social bet and handed leadership of the Base consumer app back to Coinbase. Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, is stepping in as the new lead.

Why Pollak stepped back

Pollak said he was wrong about the direction of the consumer app, though he did not specify exactly what the 'social bet' entailed. The move returns control of the app to Coinbase, the company that launched Base as an Ethereum layer-2 network. Fish, a well-known figure in crypto circles, will now oversee the consumer side of the project.

Zora's steep decline

The shake-up comes as activity on Zora, a platform built on Base, has cratered. Daily trading volume on Zora fell to roughly $112,170 on July 15, down from a peak of $63.0 million in April 2025 — a 99.8% drop. The number of coins minted on Zora also collapsed: creators minted just 852 coins on July 15, compared to a January 2026 peak of 118,069.

Base's recent technical troubles

Base itself has faced technical issues. On June 25, 2026, the Base mainnet experienced a problem where block production became 'unhealthy,' stalling activity and affecting deposits and withdrawals before recovering. The next day, June 26, Base pushed the Beryl upgrade but delayed the B20 Activation Registry to address a timing issue.

The B20 Activation Registry delay remains unresolved, and it is unclear when the timing issue will be fixed. The leadership change on the consumer app adds another layer of uncertainty for Base's ecosystem.
