Bitcoin exchange-traded funds posted $61 million in net outflows over the past week, while Ethereum ETFs pulled in $27 million, according to data compiled through August 3. The divergence marks a notable shift in investor appetite between the two largest crypto assets.
Bitcoin ETFs: redemptions mount
The $61 million in weekly outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs is the largest since late June. The selling was spread across multiple funds, with no single issuer accounting for a majority of the redemptions. The outflows come after a period of relatively flat flows in July, when the group saw a net $12 million in inflows over the prior four weeks combined.
It's not clear what triggered the pullback. No major regulatory or macro event hit the sector this week. Some traders pointed to profit-taking after Bitcoin's price held above $60,000 for most of July, but the facts don't support any single explanation.
Ethereum ETFs buck the trend
Ethereum ETFs took in $27 million, extending a streak of positive flows that began in mid-July. The funds have now recorded net inflows for three consecutive weeks, totaling $68 million over that stretch. The sustained interest suggests institutional demand for ETH exposure is building, even as Bitcoin funds lose steam.
The $27 million figure is modest compared to the daily volumes of the largest Bitcoin ETFs, but it's enough to keep Ethereum ETFs in positive territory for the month. The combined assets under management for the Ethereum ETF group now sit at roughly $9.2 billion.
What the split tells us
The simultaneous outflows from Bitcoin ETFs and inflows into Ethereum ETFs create a clear divergence. It's rare to see the two move in opposite directions at this scale. The last time Bitcoin ETFs saw weekly outflows while Ethereum ETFs saw inflows was in early May, and that divergence lasted only two weeks before both turned positive.
Whether this week's pattern holds will depend on the next round of data. The flows are reported weekly, so the next update arrives on August 10. If Bitcoin outflows accelerate or Ethereum inflows slow, the narrative could shift quickly. For now, the market is watching.
