BlackRock's IBIT fund drove a $236 million outflow from bitcoin ETFs on Tuesday, and the selling pressure pushed bitcoin below $77,500. Every major cryptocurrency is down on the day, a sign the weakness is broad rather than isolated to a single token.
The $236 million exit
The outflow was concentrated in bitcoin funds. IBIT, the largest spot bitcoin ETF by assets, accounted for the bulk of the redemptions. It's one of the bigger single-day withdrawals for the category this year, and it comes after weeks of relatively steady flows that had suggested institutional interest was holding up.
The scale matters. A $236 million single-day outflow doesn't happen by accident — it takes coordinated selling, or at least a large number of investors hitting the exit at once. For a fund that had been a reliable destination for institutional money, the reversal is notable.
Bitcoin's slide
Bitcoin slipped below $77,500 as the outflows hit. That's a level traders have been watching — the price had been holding above it for weeks, and breaking below it opens the door to more downside. Every major cryptocurrency is down on the day, which points to a broader risk-off move rather than a bitcoin-specific problem.
The fact that everything is red matters. When bitcoin drops on its own, it's often a story about the token itself — regulatory news, a hack, a whale selling. When every major coin falls together, it's usually about macro conditions or a general pullback in risk assets.
Smaller funds keep growing
Here's the split: while bitcoin funds bled, smaller crypto ETFs continued to receive inflows. Investors aren't abandoning crypto entirely — they're rotating out of the biggest, most liquid vehicle and into smaller funds.
That divergence is worth watching. If the trend holds, it suggests the sell-off is about positioning in the largest funds rather than a loss of faith in the asset class. The smaller funds drawing money cover a range of exposures, and their continued inflows show there's still appetite for crypto exposure at the right price.
The open question is whether the outflow accelerates. If bitcoin stays below $77,500, more redemptions could follow. The next few trading sessions will show whether Tuesday was a one-day blip or the start of a longer pullback.
