Bitcoin's three-month uptrend against gold has broken down, according to market data tracked this week. The reversal comes as investors pour capital into gold and precious metals ETFs, pulling momentum from the top crypto asset.
Trend reversal
The BTC/gold ratio had been climbing steadily since late February, with bitcoin outpacing the yellow metal during a stretch of U.S. banking jitters and regulatory pivots. That run ended abruptly in mid-May. The ratio has now slipped below its 50-day moving average — a technical break that traders often treat as a shift in near-term direction.
The timing isn't great for crypto bulls. Bitcoin was already struggling to reclaim its all-time high set earlier in 2026, and the breakdown against gold adds a fresh headwind.
Gold's safe-haven pull
Strong inflows into gold and precious metals ETFs tell the story. Data from fund managers show that capital that might have flowed into bitcoin is instead rotating into bullion-backed products. The move appears driven by renewed macroeconomic uncertainty — trade tensions and sticky inflation readings have pushed investors toward assets with centuries of history as stores of value.
Gold has rallied roughly 12% over the past three months. Bitcoin, meanwhile, has been range-bound, failing to hold above $85,000 for more than a few days at a time. The divergence is clear.
What the breakdown means
For the crypto market, the broken uptrend against gold isn't a disaster — it's a signal. Bitcoin has weathered similar episodes before, rebounding after gold's safe-haven trades unwind. But this particular break coincides with ETF outflows from U.S. spot bitcoin funds, which have seen net redemptions for three consecutive weeks.
If the ratio continues to slide, bitcoin could test support near its own 200-day moving average — a level that held during the selloff in March. Gold bugs, meanwhile, are betting the precious metals rally has more room to run as central banks add to reserves.
The next concrete test comes Friday, when weekly options expire and position squaring could amplify any moves.
