Bitcoin Grinds Toward $87,000 as Overhead Sell Wall Caps Rally

Bitcoin is grinding toward $87,000, but the rally keeps stalling. The culprit isn't a lack of demand — it's the ask liquidity sitting overhead, a wall of sell orders that's been capping every push higher. US equities, meanwhile, have broken out to fresh all-time highs, which makes bitcoin's hesitation look all the more stubborn.

A rally stuck below the ask wall

The setup is simple enough. Buyers keep stepping in, price pushes up, and then it hits a thick band of resting sell orders. That supply absorbs the move, and bitcoin slides back into its range. Wash, rinse, repeat. It's not a crash — it's a grind, and a slow one at that.

Overhead ask liquidity isn't some exotic force. It's just the sum of limit sell orders parked above the current price. Traders use it to take profit on the way up. When enough of it stacks in one zone, it acts like a ceiling. Right now, that ceiling sits between bitcoin and $87,000.

Equities are not waiting around

The contrast with US stocks is hard to miss. Major equity indexes have broken out to new all-time highs, and that strength usually spills over into crypto eventually. This time, the spillover hasn't arrived. Bitcoin is still range-bound, pinned below resistance while stocks run.

That divergence doesn't mean bitcoin is broken. It means the two markets are responding to different forces. Equities have their own tailwinds. Bitcoin has a supply problem sitting right above it — and until that supply gets chewed through or pulled, the ceiling holds.

What it takes to clear the ask wall

There are two ways to get past overhead liquidity. Buyers can push through it, absorbing every sell order until the wall is gone. Or sellers can pull their orders and move the ask higher, which lifts the ceiling without any buying pressure at all. Both happen. Neither has happened yet.

Until one does, expect more of the same. Bitcoin will keep testing that zone, and the zone will keep pushing back. The longer it holds, the more it becomes a reference point traders watch — and the more likely a break, when it comes, will move fast.

For now, the path toward $87,000 runs straight into the ask. And the ask isn't moving.
