Bitcoin Holds $63K as Fed Minutes and Soft Retail Sales Test Rate-Cut Hopes

Bitcoin opened the week near $63,500 after a quiet weekend and was trading around $63,400 on Monday. The focus has shifted to the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes, due this week, and a surprise decline in US retail sales that could complicate the central bank's path on rates.

Fed minutes and the hike dissent

The Fed left rates unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting in July, but the decision wasn't unanimous. Three officials favored a hike. The minutes, set for release this week, should offer detail on how worried policymakers are about inflation and whether more tightening is on the table.

Investors have been waiting for this document since the meeting. It's the clearest look they'll get at the internal debate before the next decision.

Retail sales post first drop in nine months

US retail sales fell 0.6% in July, the first decline in nine months. The soft reading, combined with recent unemployment and inflation data, has trimmed expectations for a September rate increase. The market is now pricing in a slower path, but the three dissenting votes from July suggest the hawkish camp isn't backing down.

That tension is what traders are chewing on. A weaker consumer could push the Fed toward a pause, but sticky inflation could force its hand.

Macro data deluge this week

Thursday brings weekly initial jobless claims and the August Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index. Later in the week, July housing starts, pending home sales, and the August S&P Global PMI readings will round out the picture. Each print could move the dollar and, by extension, crypto prices.

The calendar is packed, and every number will be read through the lens of what it means for the next Fed meeting.

Altcoins: HYPE, RAIN lead, WLFI gets a bank charter

Among larger caps, HYPE rose 3.5% and RAIN gained 2.5%. ETH challenged the $1,900 level while XRP fought to hold $1.00 support. WLFI traded in the green after receiving a bank charter license, a rare regulatory stamp for a crypto firm.

The altcoin moves were modest, but the WLFI news stands out. A bank charter is a big deal for a crypto project trying to bridge into traditional finance.
