Bitcoin Posts Third-Best August on Record as Treasury Move Fuels Risk-On Mood

Bitcoin just wrapped up its third-best August on record, returning 25% for the month. The rally came despite the usual seasonal weakness, helped by a U.S. Treasury announcement and a surge of money into bitcoin ETFs.

Why the seasonal slump didn't bite

Bitcoin typically sees weaker returns from June through September, but this year it defied that pattern. In June and July, the price traded below $65,000 with muted volatility. Then August took off.

A key catalyst came from Washington. The U.S. Treasury Department said in mid-August it would more than double its government debt repurchases, responding to fixed income market pressure and yields that had surged to near 20-year highs. Lower long-term yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like bitcoin and gold, which supports risk-on sentiment.

ETF inflows hit a 10-month high

Investors poured over $2.8 billion into bitcoin ETFs in August, the most since October, when bitcoin hit an all-time high. That wave of institutional money helped push the price up even as the broader market stayed cautious.

The Clarity Act gets a presidential push

President Trump urged lawmakers to pass the crypto Clarity Act, calling the draft 'very powerful' after meeting with crypto industry leaders. The endorsement adds momentum to a bill that could define how digital assets are regulated in the U.S., though its path through Congress remains uncertain.

Price action and what's next

Bitcoin reached as high as $81,281 last week before sliding. It recently stood at $76,883, down nearly 3% in 24 hours. The pullback comes after a strong run, and traders are watching whether the Treasury's move and the ETF inflows can sustain the momentum into September.
