Bitcoin Slips From $82,000 Resistance, Forms Contracting Triangle Below $81,500

Bitcoin Slips From $82,000 Resistance, Forms Contracting Triangle Below $81,500

Bitcoin failed to clear the $82,000 resistance zone and started a downside correction today, settling back below $81,500 as bears reasserted control. The world's largest crypto is currently trading above $80,500 and the 100-hour simple moving average, but a contracting triangle pattern on the hourly chart suggests the next move could come soon.

A wall at $82,000

The $82,000 level has proven stubborn. BTC made a run at it but couldn't sustain the push, and sellers stepped in to knock prices lower. Immediate resistance now sits at $81,500, with a more significant hurdle at $81,800. A close above $81,800 could open the door to $82,250 and then $82,500. But so far, each attempt has been met with fresh selling pressure.

Contracting triangle keeps BTC in check

On the hourly chart of BTC/USD, a key contracting triangle is forming with support at $80,800. This pattern typically signals a period of consolidation before a breakout. If Bitcoin can't push above $81,800, the lower boundary at $80,800 becomes the immediate test. That level coincides with the 76.4% Fibonacci retracement of the recent move up, adding technical weight.

Bearish signals on the hourly chart

The hourly MACD is gaining pace in the bearish zone, and the hourly RSI for BTC/USD is below the 50 level. Neither indicator is flashing a buy signal right now. Momentum is leaning toward the downside, even if the price hasn't broken down dramatically yet.

Where support lies if the drop deepens

If the triangle breaks to the downside and $80,800 gives way, the next major support levels are $80,400, then $79,400, followed by $79,000 and $78,500. That's a decent drop from current levels, so traders are watching the triangle's breakout direction closely. The market is waiting to see if bulls can reclaim $81,800 in the coming hours, or if the correction will extend toward the $79,000 area.
