Bitcoin Tops $85K as Core PCE Cools to 3.0%, October Fed Odds Slide

Bitcoin cleared $85,000 on Wednesday, minutes after the US reported that its preferred inflation gauge cooled more than forecast. The core PCE price index rose 3.0% year-over-year, under the 3.3% consensus, while headline PCE slowed to 3.4% from July's 3.7% reading. Gold moved higher alongside crypto.

The reaction was fast because the number was soft in both directions. Monthly core PCE came in at 0.2%, below the 0.3% estimate, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis also revised how it calculates prices in three components — a change expected to trim August's annual figure by a few tenths of a percentage point.

What the Fed gets to see before October

This matters because the Fed hiked by 0.25% on Sept. 16 to a 3.75%–4.00% range, its first increase since 2023. Of 18 officials, 16 projected at least one more move before year-end. As of Sept. 28, CME FedWatch showed a 72.5% chance of an October hike. After Wednesday's print, that number sat under 40.

The dollar had been having its best month since June on hawkish Fed signals going into the release. That bid faded quickly.

Growth is not the problem

Harder to square with the rate-hike case: GDP grew at a 2.2% annual rate in the second quarter, beating the 1.5% forecast, and consumer spending adjusted for inflation jumped 0.6% in August — the biggest monthly gain since March 2025. Households are still spending. The Fed's worry is whether they keep doing it at a pace that reaccelerates prices.

Bank forecasts had flagged the risk ahead of the release, expecting core PCE to print around 0.27%. It came in lighter. That's a miss in the right direction for anyone holding risk assets.

Friday's payrolls are the real gate

The September jobs report lands Friday and is the last major data point before the Fed meets on Oct. 27–28. A hot print would put the October hike back in play and test whether bitcoin's move above $85,000 holds. A soft one gives the doves their argument.

For now, the market has repriced, bitcoin has repriced with it, and the dollar has given back part of its September run. The next 48 hours will decide how much of that sticks.
