Bitcoin surged to $78,000, closing the largest weekly candle in its history by notional value. The move capped a seven-day run that pushed the asset to a fresh all-time high and dragged a broad basket of altcoins up with it. Michael Saylor's Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy, is back in the green on the rally.
The record weekly candle
The weekly close is a milestone not just for the price but for the size of the move. In notional terms — the dollar value of the price change multiplied by the volume that traded — it's the biggest single week the market has ever posted. That matters because it shows real money moved this week, not just thin orders driving the tape higher.
The candle also sets up the next few sessions: a weekly close at this level puts Bitcoin in territory it has only touched briefly before, and the question is whether the follow-through arrives or the record stands as a one-off.
Altcoins join the rally
The rebound wasn't just Bitcoin. Ten leading altcoins posted gains of 50% or more during the same stretch, a breadth that hasn't shown up in a single week in this cycle. The moves weren't confined to the usual large-cap names — several mid-tier tokens and exchange-linked coins saw some of the sharpest percentage jumps.
That kind of broad participation is what separates this week from the narrowly led rallies of the past few months. When a dozen coins are up by half or more in the same window, it's not a single token carrying the market — it's a coordinated move.
Strategy turns a corner
For Michael Saylor's company, the rally erases months of pressure. Strategy had been sitting on paper losses after buying Bitcoin through the earlier drawdown, and the stock had lagged as a result. With Bitcoin back at these levels, the treasury is comfortably positive again, and the stock has followed.
The timing matters because the company has been a steady buyer this year. A rally that puts its recent purchases into the green removes the overhang that had made investors nervous about the average price of its stack.
What the close leaves open
The record candle is now in the books, but a weekly close is just one data point. Whether this becomes a sustained trend depends on the next few days of trading — specifically, whether the price can hold above $78,000 into the next weekly close. The altcoin breadth that carried this week will also need to stick, or the rally loses its legs.
The next Sunday close will tell whether this was the peak of a sharp move or the beginning of a longer run. For now, the tape is firmly in favor of the buyers.
