Bitcoin's Rally Hits Resistance Wall as Overbought Signals Mount

Bitcoin pushed to a fresh local high on Tuesday, but the move is already running into a wall of resistance that could force a pullback. The climb from the lows of the past two weeks has been steep, and the higher timeframes are starting to look overheated.

Resistance stacking up

The daily chart shows a concentrated band of resistance just above the current price, and it's been building for a while. Price wicked up into the 50-week moving average on the weekly chart, which is also acting as a ceiling. That's a lot of sellers sitting in the same zone, and it's not giving up easily.

Short-term momentum still points up

The 4-hour chart tells a different story. There's a breakout from a bull pennant, and a smaller falling wedge has also broken out. The stochastic RSI on that timeframe is at the bottom and crossing back up, which signals that immediate momentum is still to the upside. So the near-term bias is bullish, even as the bigger picture warns of exhaustion.

Overbought warnings on the weekly

Step back, and the weekly chart is flashing caution. The weekly stochastic RSI is driving toward its top limit, and price has already wicked into the 50-week moving average. That combination has historically been a poor time to chase. Higher timeframes are overbought, and resistance is likely to cause at least a pause.

The pullback case

If the recent high turns out to be the top, the retracement that follows could find support at a key Fibonacci level that lines up with the 200-day moving average. That's a natural place for buyers to step back in. For now, though, the market is stuck against that resistance, and the path of least resistance might be lower.
