BitGo has added an sBTC bridge to its platform, giving users a direct way to convert Bitcoin into sBTC and back again without leaving the custody service. The integration streamlines what used to be a multi-step process, letting institutional clients swap between the two assets in a single transaction.
What the sBTC Bridge Does
A blockchain bridge is a tool that lets tokens move from one network to another. In this case, the bridge connects Bitcoin to the sBTC token, which is a representation of Bitcoin on a separate blockchain. The integration means BitGo customers can convert BTC to sBTC — and reverse the trade — inside the same interface they use for storage and transfers.
Before the bridge, converting Bitcoin to a tokenized version typically required sending BTC to a separate exchange or using a third-party service. That added steps, time, and exposure to counterparty risk. BitGo's bridge removes those extra layers, keeping the conversion within its own custody system.
BitGo is one of the largest custodians in the cryptocurrency space, holding billions in assets for institutions like hedge funds, exchanges, and asset managers. Adding a direct bridge for sBTC lets those clients take advantage of tokenized Bitcoin without moving funds off the platform. That could mean faster trades and lower friction for strategies that rely on sBTC emissions or liquidity.
Tokenized Bitcoin has become a key piece of the decentralized finance ecosystem. sBTC, in particular, is designed to bring Bitcoin's value into smart-contract networks. By giving institutional holders a direct path to that token, BitGo is essentially opening a new on-ramp for BTC holders who want to use their Bitcoin in DeFi without wrapping it through a centralized exchange.
The company has not disclosed the specific blockchain on which sBTC operates or the total volume it expects to move through the bridge. Those details could come as the integration rolls out to more clients. For now, the service is available to BitGo's existing users, and the company says it plans to support additional assets in the future.
The bridge is live now. Users can begin converting BTC to sBTC directly through their BitGo account.
