BitGo has selected Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive solution for moving Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) across different blockchain networks, the company announced.
What is WBTC?
WBTC is a tokenized version of Bitcoin that operates on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows Bitcoin holders to participate in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications on Ethereum while maintaining a 1:1 peg to Bitcoin. BitGo is the primary custodian and issuer of WBTC, managing the reserves that back the token.
Why Chainlink CCIP?
Chainlink CCIP is designed to enable secure cross-chain transfers of tokens and data. By adopting it as the exclusive interoperability solution, BitGo aims to ensure that WBTC can move seamlessly between blockchains without relying on multiple, potentially less secure bridges. The protocol uses Chainlink’s decentralized oracle network to verify transactions, reducing the risk of hacks that have plagued other cross-chain bridges.
WBTC is one of the most widely used wrapped assets in DeFi, with billions of dollars in total value locked across various protocols. A single, standardized interoperability solution could simplify how WBTC is used across different chains, potentially increasing liquidity and reducing fragmentation. The move also signals growing trust in Chainlink’s infrastructure for critical financial operations.
The selection comes as the crypto industry continues to grapple with cross-chain security. Several high-profile bridge exploits have led to losses exceeding $1 billion in recent years. BitGo’s choice of CCIP may set a precedent for other wrapped asset issuers.
No timeline for the integration has been disclosed.
