BitGo’s WBTC Shift Drives $15B in LayerZero-to-Chainlink Migrations

BitGo’s WBTC Shift Drives $15B in LayerZero-to-Chainlink Migrations

BitGo’s decision to move its Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) has pushed the total value of announced migrations from LayerZero to Chainlink to nearly $15 billion. The wave of cross-chain protocol switches was triggered by a $292 million exploit on the Kelp bridge, which sent shockwaves through the decentralized finance sector.

The Kelp exploit that started it

In July, attackers drained $292 million from the Kelp bridge, a cross-chain protocol that relied on LayerZero for message passing. The incident exposed vulnerabilities in the bridge’s security model and prompted a rapid reassessment among projects using LayerZero. Within weeks, several major protocols announced they would migrate their oracle and messaging infrastructure to Chainlink, citing its battle-tested architecture and decentralized node network.

BitGo’s WBTC decision

BitGo, the custodian behind Wrapped Bitcoin, became the latest and largest name to join the exodus. The company said it would move WBTC’s oracle and cross-chain messaging from LayerZero to Chainlink. That single migration added billions in total value locked to the tally of announced moves. Combined with earlier defections, the total now stands at $14.5 billion in announced migrations, with BitGo’s WBTC pushing the figure close to $15 billion.

What the $14.5 billion figure means

The number represents the cumulative value of assets that projects have publicly committed to shift from LayerZero to Chainlink. It does not include unannounced or pending migrations. The figure underscores how quickly trust can shift in decentralized finance after a high-profile exploit. For Chainlink, the influx strengthens its position as the dominant oracle and messaging provider. For LayerZero, the outflow raises questions about its security guarantees and long-term adoption.

No further migrations have been announced since BitGo’s move, but the $15 billion milestone is likely to put pressure on other projects still using LayerZero to review their own risk exposure. The Kelp bridge exploit remains under investigation, and no arrests or fund recoveries have been reported.
