BitMEX, BitMart, Odos, Dango, Storj: Five Crypto Firms Shut Down in One Week

This week, the crypto industry saw a cluster of shutdowns. BitMEX said on July 23 it will cease operations on September 23, with new registrations already disabled. BitMart will discontinue all trading services on August 26, with a full shutdown by January 31, 2027. DEX aggregator Odos winds down today, July 30. Dango, the 'Endgame Exchange,' will stop its L1 blockchain on August 13. And decentralized cloud storage company Storj Labs filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

A familiar pattern?

Analyst Mister Crypto pointed to a historical pattern: the Mt. Gox collapse in 2015 was followed by an 11,000% Bitcoin price increase; Bitgrail in 2018 preceded a 2,000% increase; FTX in 2022 preceded a 700% increase. He claimed the BitMEX shutdown may signal a new bull run, stating 'the bottom shows up right when the weakest big player finally breaks.' But this time, Bitcoin's price hasn't budged. Past exchange collapses like FTX led to violent short-term declines, but the BitMEX and BitMine shutdowns have not moved the charts, casting doubt on the pattern.

What analysts are saying

Ran Neuner argued that the bottoming process is in its last stages, with the next phase dominated by licensed exchanges and institutional capital. That view aligns with the idea that the weakest players are being cleared out. But the lack of a market reaction raises questions. If the pattern held, Bitcoin should have dropped. It didn't.

The bottoming process

Analyst Klarck predicted a cycle bottom at $40,000-$45,000 by October-November. That's a specific call, but it depends on whether this wave of closures really marks the end of the shakeout. Storj's bankruptcy adds a different flavor — it's not an exchange, but a cloud storage firm. That suggests the pain is spreading beyond trading platforms.

The next concrete event is Dango's blockchain shutdown on August 13. Then BitMart stops trading on August 26. BitMEX goes dark on September 23. Whether those deadlines trigger any market moves — or if the pattern is truly broken — remains the open question.
