BitMEX to Shut Down in September as Market Share Drops Below 0.01%

BitMEX, the exchange that launched the first perpetual swap in 2016, will shut down on September 23, 2026. Reduce-only trading begins August 26, and forced closes could happen before the final date. The exchange's market share fell below 0.01% and daily volume hovered around $400,000 — a business that was no longer sustainable.

The end of a crypto original

BitMEX introduced the XBTUSD perpetual swap in May 2016, a product that reshaped crypto derivatives. For years it dominated the market. But competitors like Binance, Bybit, OKX, and a wave of decentralized exchanges ate into its share. By 2026, BitMEX was a ghost of its former self. The shutdown isn't a surprise — it's been coming for a while.

No bankruptcy, no freeze

This isn't 2022 all over again. BitMEX's closure involves no balance-sheet hole, no withdrawal freeze, and no bankruptcy filing. The 2022 CeFi collapses — FTX, BlockFi, Voyager, Celsius, Genesis — were driven by hidden leverage, credit exposure, and customer-asset misuse. BitMEX is just shutting down because the business stopped working. That's a different kind of end, and arguably a cleaner one.

Bitcoin's rough ride

Bitcoin peaked near $126,000 in October 2025. As of July 23, 2026, it traded around $64,884 — a decline of roughly 48%. That's painful, but not unprecedented. Previous Bitcoin cycle drawdowns hit 84.7% (2013-2015), 83.7% (2017-2018), and 77.1% (2021-2022), according to Bitcoin.com's drawdown tracker. The current slide is milder, but it's still squeezing exchanges with thin margins.

Meanwhile, crypto hacks are becoming more frequent but less costly. TRM Labs recorded 207 incidents in the first half of 2026 — more than double the 83 in H1 2025. Total losses fell to $972 million from $2.3 billion. The $292 million KelpDAO theft in April was linked to North Korea's Lazarus Group, which used compromised RPC nodes and DDoS attacks. BlockFills, an institutional trading firm with over 2,000 clients and $61 billion in 2025 volume, paused client deposits and withdrawals in February 2026 to restore liquidity. It's still working through that.

BitMEX's final trading day is September 23. Reduce-only mode kicks in on August 26. Users have until then to close positions or move funds. After that, the exchange that started it all will be gone.
