BitMEX to Shut Down on September 23, Ending a Crypto Era

BitMEX will permanently shut down on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC. Parent company HDR Global Trading Limited made the call after a strategic review. The exchange, once a giant in crypto derivatives, is closing its doors for good.

The end of an era

BitMEX launched in 2014 and changed crypto trading. It introduced 100x leveraged perpetual swaps, a product that became an industry standard. At its peak, BitMEX was one of the world's largest exchanges, known for deep liquidity and advanced features. No customer funds were ever lost to a hack during its near-decade-long run.

Legal troubles and decline

In 2020, US authorities charged BitMEX's founders with violating anti-money laundering laws. The company later settled, and former CEO Arthur Hayes pleaded guilty to Bank Secrecy Act violations. The legal fallout opened the door for competitors, who captured significant market share. BitMEX never fully recovered.

What users need to do

New account registrations have already been halted. After August 26, users won't be able to open new positions — they can only reduce existing ones. The final deadline is September 23. After that, customers can only view balances, transaction history, and withdraw remaining assets. Anyone with open positions or funds on the exchange needs to act before then.

What happens after

Once the shutdown hits, trading stops entirely. The platform becomes a withdrawal-only portal. HDR Global Trading Limited hasn't said what will happen to any unclaimed funds after the final deadline, but the message is clear: move your money now.
