BitMine Immersion Technologies has bought another $79 million worth of Ethereum, sending shares up 7% and bringing the firm closer to a goal that would make it one of the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency.
The purchase
The company disclosed the buy this week, saying it added to its ether stash during a stretch where ETH has been climbing. BitMine has been accumulating ether for months, and this latest purchase pushes its total holdings toward the 5% of the total supply that management has said it wants. That's a big number, and it's not there yet.
Why 5% matters
Getting to 5% of all ether in existence would put BitMine in a unique position. It would be one of the largest single holders of the second-biggest cryptocurrency, giving it influence over market sentiment and potentially a say in network decisions. The company hasn't said what it plans to do with that stake, but the steady buying suggests it sees long-term value.
Tom Lee's involvement
BitMine is often referred to as Tom Lee's firm. Lee, a well-known crypto bull and co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, has been public about his optimism on digital assets. His name attached to the accumulation strategy adds a layer of attention, and the market seems to be paying attention: shares jumped 7% on the news.
BitMine hasn't said how much more it plans to buy or when it expects to hit the 5% mark. But the pattern is clear: it's buying ether on dips and on rises. With Ethereum trading near recent highs, the company's appetite doesn't look like it's fading. The next move will be the next disclosure.
