Bitwise has launched an ETF tied to NEAR, the token behind the NEAR Protocol blockchain, and investment firm SVRN says it intends to accumulate 10% of the token's total supply. Both firms are framing NEAR not as a general-purpose smart contract platform but as infrastructure for an AI-driven economy — a thesis they laid out in an interview with Bitcoin.com News.
What Bitwise actually rolled out
Bitwise's NEAR ETF gives traditional brokerage customers direct exposure to the token without needing a crypto exchange account or a self-custody wallet. The product is aimed squarely at crypto-AI demand on Wall Street, according to the firm. That's a specific bet: not that NEAR wins the general smart-contract race, but that AI workloads — agents, data markets, compute coordination — end up running on chains built for that purpose.
It's a narrower pitch than the one most altcoin ETFs make. Bitwise isn't selling NEAR as digital gold or as a faster Ethereum. The pitch is infrastructure.
SVRN's 10% target is the bigger number
An ETF launch is one thing. A firm stating it wants 10% of a token's supply is another. SVRN hasn't put a timeline on the accumulation, and the facts don't specify how it plans to buy or over what period. But 10% is a large enough position that it would make SVRN one of the token's most significant holders if it follows through.
Both firms described NEAR in the same terms — blockchain infrastructure for an AI-driven economy. That's not a coincidence. It's a coordinated thesis, and the interview with Bitcoin.com News was clearly meant to put it on the record.
The crypto-AI trade, now with a ticker
For most of this year, the crypto-AI narrative has lived in venture rounds, token launches, and a lot of Twitter threads. An ETF changes the plumbing. It means a financial advisor in a suburban office can allocate client money to NEAR through the same account that holds their index funds. Whether that advisor understands what NEAR does is a separate question.
What Bitwise gets out of this is first-mover positioning in a category that doesn't have many pure plays. What SVRN gets is less obvious — accumulation at scale tends to move markets, and announcing the target before hitting it invites front-running. That's their problem to manage.
What's still unknown
SVRN hasn't disclosed a timeline for the 10% target, and there's no public schedule for when it expects to report progress. Bitwise's ETF is live, but first-week flows aren't in the facts. The thesis — that AI needs its own blockchain layer and NEAR is it — is now a tradeable position. Whether the market agrees is what the next few months will show.
