A group of nine major crypto and finance firms — including BlackRock, Coinbase, and Strategy — announced the Bitcoin Security Consortium on July 23, pledging a combined $15 million to prepare the network for the eventual threat of quantum computing. The consortium's first focus is cryptographic upgrades that could protect Bitcoin's signatures from being broken by a sufficiently powerful quantum machine running Shor's algorithm.
The quantum threat in numbers
Bitcoin relies on elliptic-curve cryptography for digital signatures. A quantum computer could theoretically derive a private key from a public key, exposing funds. A Dune Analytics dashboard shows over 7 million BTC — about 34.9% of analyzed supply, worth roughly $460.8 billion at recent prices — have exposed public keys. That figure grew by about 77,275 BTC in the most recent complete month alone. No cryptographically relevant quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin's signatures is known to exist currently, but the consortium isn't waiting.
Why the consortium is structured this way
The group won't pool members' funding or select grant recipients. Instead, each company independently decides which developers and researchers to back. The consortium also takes no official position on changes to Bitcoin's protocol; members can express their own views, but the group won't develop or direct the protocol. Mike Schmidt, executive director of Bitcoin developer funding nonprofit Brink, coordinates the day-to-day work on a volunteer basis.
What the industry is saying
Capriole Investments founder Charles Edwards said his proprietary 'quantum discount factor' for Bitcoin had reached 30%, calling quantum computing the network's largest long-term technical threat. Strategy CEO Phong Le said: 'As long-term holders, we have every incentive to see Bitcoin remain secure for generations.' The consortium's other founding members include Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Galaxy.
What comes next
The consortium is now soliciting proposals from researchers and developers working on quantum-resistant cryptography for Bitcoin. No timeline for a protocol upgrade has been set, and the group has no authority to push one — but the $15 million in backing signals that some of the industry's biggest players are taking the long view on a threat that, for now, remains theoretical.
